One of the unique perks of the greatest trade show of the year, the Nightclub & Bar Show in Vegas, is being surrounded by a wide variety of new wine, beer and liquor companies from all over the world and sampling the goods.    Whether launching a new product, looking for increased distribution, or building a brand, exhibitors offer up samples in hopes of resonating above their competition.   It would be difficult to imagine a couple comedians serving up tequila that would stand out among their peers, and yet there was one comedian-owned tequila that arguably made that claim.

Number Juan Tequila, owned by comedians Ron White and Alex Reymundo, showcased their Blanco, Reposado, and Extra Anejo tequilas.  Conceived in 2011 after Ron and Alex discovered an 80-year old distillery in Jalisco, Mexico, the two sought to bring the tequila into the US where it had no presence.  From an interview with The Santa Barbara Independent, Alex explains the origin of the name, “Number Juan comes from one of many jokes about Mexicans in NASCAR, a driver named Manny Peddy in the car Number Juan, the uninsured F-150.  I just loved the tongue-in-cheek aspect… I wanted it to be called something that everyone can say.” Since 2013, Number Juan has competed in five tequila festivals and walked away with nearly a dozen medals including a Best in Show for packaging.

Sampling the Extra Anejo tequila was no joke.   Anejo tequilas are distinguished from other types through the maturation process where they are aged at least one year.   In 2006, tequilas aged more than 3 years formally received their own classification as Extra (or Ultra) Anejo.  The Number Juan Extra Anejo tequila is aged for a full 5 years in a charred white oak American barrel.   Fruity and herbal but not too sweet as the hint of vanilla and caramel are careful not to overwhelm, the amber-colored tequila offers an aromatic sensory experience inherited from the oak barrel.  A peppery and earthy tone lingers straight through the finish with no burn, plenty of complexity, and silky smooth.  Number Juan is a tequila that must be sipped neat before any attempt mixing into a cocktail.

A standout at the Nightclub & Bar Show this year, Number Juan offered more than juan reason to try out their excellent tequila.   For more information on Number Juan Tequila and where to find a bottle near you, visit their website at numberjuantequila.com.
